Avonside Early Childhood Centre

All about us

The early days

Our History

Avonside Early Childhood Centre has a rich history, dating back to the 1940s. It stands as one of the oldest established Early Childhood Centres in New Zealand. Over the years, it has earned a stellar reputation within the community for providing high-quality childcare and education. Generations of families have passed through its doors, benefiting from the nurturing environment and educational programs.
In 1943 when we opened our doors, we were called “Avonside Girls School Nursery” and were a childcare facility for the working mums connected to the school. Teachers wore a uniform much like nurses, and were seen as “babysitters”, so much has changed since those days.

Childcare, not profit

Accessible, quality service

Operated as a not-for-profit center, Avonside Early Childhood Centre is governed by a dedicated Board of Trustees made up from dedicated parents of past or present children that make up the Avonside whānau. One of the board’s key initiatives is to ensure that their quality services remain accessible to all families. As a result, the center keeps its fees affordable.
Avonside has seen many centre managers and teachers pass through its doors over the last 80 years, and each staff member has left their mark on the centre with changes and improvements for the better. We still keep in touch with past Avonside family members, and some of our teachers currently working with us have been here for nearly 20 years.
