Avonside Early Childhood Centre

Assessment, Planning & Evaluation

Rationale

Children will experience a planned curriculum that includes their direct and indirect learning experiences. It is important to acknowledge that learning is critical for both adults and children and is a life-long process.

Purpose

1.      To provide a planned curriculum based on the children’s interests, abilities and strengths for both groups and individuals

2.      To ensure that all planning, both formal and informal, is evaluated and forms the basis for future planning

3.      To encourage all staff to become reflective practitioners

Guidelines

Observation and Assessment

The Process:

·         Staff will observe the children formally and informally ensuring each child is assessed regularly

·         Data is collected on each child including learning stories, artwork, photos etc.

·         The programme will further provide a rich and stimulating curriculum, working with an emergent and enquiry learning curriculum, based on observed, identified needs and interests of individuals and groups of children.

·         All planning is linked to the principles, strands and goals of Te Whāriki and are evaluated against the learning outcomes of Te Whāriki.

·         Online Assessment (StoryPark) is used to gather evidence, whānau and child voice, develop plans (individual and group) and to journal learning and development.

·         Each child will have a learning journey profile book for personalised planning to the individual child and

for individual group stories.

Parent/Whanau/Child Contribution and Consultation

·         StoryPark, learning journey profile books are accessible at all times to children, parents and whānau.

·         Profiles are sent home regularly and parents/caregivers are encouraged to contribute to their child’s profile and online journal.

·         Child profiles are given to the parent/caregiver of a child when that child leaves the centre.
